About Us

Palisades began in the spring of 2004 with the escape of Piedmont, our founder's cat. The second Piedmont stepped out of the back door he was confronted by a neighbors cat and took off running. This of course resulted in a search of all of the area shelters that went on for weeks. It was the start of kitten season and the idea of starting a rescue had been bouncing around in our founder's head. After 3 weeks and 2 days of searching for Piedmont 13 kittens and 2 momma cats were pulled from an area shelter and Palisades was officially up and running. The next morning Piedmont showed back up at the house, ran in and acted as if nothing had happened. He had no idea what he had helped create.

For the first few years we focused on cats and kittens. Our cat motto is that even the smallest feline is a "masterpiece" and should be treated as such. We are working for a day when "all kittens are wanted and loved, and where every cat has a safe, warm place to sleep ... and to dream." We are dedicated to making this come true for all kitties that come through our doors. In the fall of 2007 we were able to expand our programs to include dog rescue and adoptions as well.

While our main focus day to day is our adoptable animal programs we feel strongly that rescues can make a huge difference to the community in ways other than adoptions. Because of this we created our feral cat program where we help support feral cat caretakers with TNR (trap, neuter, release) services. Another program we feel strongly about is our Soldier Outreach. Many soldiers are given very short notice when being deployed which leaves their animal companions with few options. With this program we work to provide long term foster care or permanent placement for their pets. It is our honor to help these amazing men and women who give so much to protect us. We hope in the coming years to add many more areas of community outreach!

We focus mainly on pulling from rural gas shelters as we feel these are the animals that need our help the most and where we can make the biggest difference. We strive to help all of our animal friends in need from purebreds to mutts, FIV/FeLV positive and negative cats, heartworm positive dogs, those with less than perfect past behavior, seniors to newborns and everyone in between.

In July 2009 we opened our adoption and outreach center near downtown Cary. All animals in our care spend time in both a family setting (their foster home) and at the adoption center. This allows us to get to know them very well so that we can make the best match possible for them and their new families. With the adoption center's opening we feel we will be better able to serve the community. Its been an exciting 5 years and we cannot wait to see what the next 5 years will bring! We hope you will be a part of making the next 5 years great!
